Bill Nighy and Miranda Richardson star in a story of grief and celebrity, set in the intense spring and summer of New Labour's election victory and Diana's death. Nighy is a PR guru who has to stop and re-evaluate his world when his daughter threatens to leave his life, perhaps as revenge for his serial infidelities. Based on the Parable of the Lost Son, we follow Lilah, a 16 year old British-Pakistani Muslim girl who is searching for her place in the world. Since the death of her mother, Lilah has begrudgingly taken on her mum’s role in the family home. Frustrated by her inherently obstinate father and her brother’s legalistic faith, Lilah makes a plan to run away with Jimmy, the 22 year old guy she has been seeing in secret. Torn between the call of a life without imposed values and the importance of her culture, Lilah makes the choice to flee, putting her family’s forgiveness to the ultimate test.

When the teacher tells the daughter that she took care of her father with Alzheimer’s until he died, the daughter begins to wonder if she, now pregnant, will ever be able to be free from the painful memories involving her mother.

Daughter explores the way women are viewed in society by following three female characters on a Friday night out in St Kilda, who's lives become entwined and affected by an act of violence this fateful night. The award winning short film and an awareness project was inspired by the tragic murder cases of Jill Meagher in Brunswick and St Kilda's own Tracy Connelly, whose occupation as a sex worker was highlighted in the media, leading to her murder and personal story being sadly overshadowed. The main themes explored in the film are violence against women and victim blaming, shown through the eyes of three female leads, lead by Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) as Scarlett, Aisha Tara (Heartbreak High) as Jemma and Carolyn Rey as Alethea.
